The numbers indicate magnification & light gathering ability. In an 8x40, The image you see is magnified 8 times, and the diameter of the lens at the big end is 40 millimeters. In an 8x50, the magnification would be the same, but the image would be brighter due to the larger lens gathering more light. Since the image is dimmed by all binoculars, there is an advantage to spend extra for the larger diameter, particularly if used when the light is dim. However these binoculars are bigger, heavier, and more expensive. |
